AMUNC, or the Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference is the largest model UN in the Southern Hemisphere.
It has been running every year since UNSW hosted the first conference in 1995 and now has around 500 people from
all over Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific attending each year. Beyond simply improving your public
speaking skills, AMUNC will allow you to:
Add a practical element and first hand experience to your degree.
Connect you with students all over the Asia-Pacific Region and beyond.
Meet likeminded people from UNSW.
Learn the practicalities of the United Nations including how to: write a resolution;
conduct yourself in session; and deal with real problems faced by the UN.
Research the perspective of your allocated country and argue issues from that viewpoint.
Please continue reading for more information on how to join UNSW's delegation to this year's conference.
More information on AMUNC can be obtained from the official AMUNC website.
AMUNC 2008 will be held at the University of Adelaide from 6th-11th July. The conference theme for this
year is "Challenges and Change: A time for new thinking", and as usual, the UN Society will be organising a
delegation to represent UNSW at AMUNC.
Dates:
Leave on the 4th/5th - Return on the 12th July 2008. Registration through this site from 5th-25th of April.
Costs:
The following costs are current and MAY be reduced by possible sponsorship but you must allow that these are final costs:
$300 - flights
$250-$500 - accomodation
$189 - conference fee $740-$990 - TOTAL
IMPORTANT:
The first important point is: Don't register yourself! Let us know of your interest and join our delegation. Then, the Society will book as a group to secure group discounts and great country assignments.
The UNSW delegation will be representing the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Indonesia and Belgium on every committee except the ICJ which is by application.
Regitration will open on Sunday April 5th on this webpage and will close on April 25th. You will need to have three committee preferences (not country preferences) and must detail your reason for choosing your first preference in 150 words and any experience in 250 words or less.
You must also commit to the monetary requirements of this trip from day one. By the end of April AMUNC requires the conference fee and deposits for flights and accommodation (approximately $500 in total) which will be required to be paid to the UN Society upon selection to confirm your place.
Completely unexperienced applicants should not be discouraged as AMUNC '07 was my first conference and is a valuable oppourtunity.
Security Council and ICJ applications should be made to me ASAP. See the AMUNC website mentioned below for criterea as these committees require a special application.
